Why go

See Maasai Mara
beyond the obvious.

The Maasai Mara is more than the annual migration. Its open grasslands, river systems and surrounding conservancies support exceptional resident wildlife throughout the year—making it a rewarding choice for first-time visitors, photographers and returning safari travellers alike.

When to visit

There is no single
“right” month.

Choose according to what you most want to experience—not simply the busiest season.

Worth knowingWildlife movements and rainfall are natural and cannot be guaranteed.

January – March

Warm, clear and wildlife-rich

A strong period for resident wildlife and young animals, with generally drier conditions and fewer peak-season crowds.

April – June

Green season

Lush landscapes, dramatic skies, excellent birding and often better value. Some roads can be muddy after rain.

July – October

Migration season

The famous herds may move into the Mara as rainfall and grazing dictate. Demand is high and river crossings can never be guaranteed.

November – December

Short rains and fresh landscapes

Quieter travel, renewed grasslands and rewarding resident game, with intermittent showers possible.

Our local recommendation

A better safari often begins
with where you stay.

For a quieter, more flexible safari, combine time in the main reserve with a private conservancy. Conservancies limit vehicle numbers and may allow night drives, guided walks and off-road sightings. If your schedule permits, four nights gives you time to settle into the landscape rather than chase a checklist.

Good to know

Honest answers before
you start planning.

Still unsure? Our Safari Specialist can help you compare seasons, areas and accommodation styles.

Is the Maasai Mara worth visiting outside migration season?

Yes. The Mara supports abundant resident wildlife throughout the year, including lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant and plains game. Migration is one seasonal highlight, not the only reason to visit.

How many nights should I spend in the Maasai Mara?

We usually recommend three to four nights. Four nights allows more flexibility for wildlife movements, weather and time in both the reserve and a conservancy.

Should I stay in the reserve or a private conservancy?

The reserve offers classic Mara landscapes and access to migration areas. Conservancies generally have fewer vehicles and can allow activities such as guided walks and night drives. A combination can work very well.

Can you guarantee a wildebeest river crossing?

No responsible operator can guarantee a crossing. The herds and their timing respond to rainfall and grazing conditions. We plan carefully but keep expectations honest.

Is the Maasai Mara suitable for families?

Yes, when the pace, camp and activities are selected carefully. We can recommend family-friendly accommodation and private guiding around children’s ages and interests.
